BNO visa is short for Hong Kong British National (overseas) Visa. It is the British government offers to people in Hong Kong who is British National (overseas) to get an access to full British Citizen. The visa scheme was open to apply from 31 January from 2021.
Requirements for BNO visa application
- A British national (overseas)
- 18 or older
- a permanent home in Hong Kong, the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man
- have enough money to support yourself and your family
- your relationship with family members
Documents to apply for BNO Visa
- A valid passport or other travel document that shows your identity and nationality.
- a current or expired BNO passport (or a photocopy) to show your BNO status if you are BNO.
- tuberculosis (TB) test certificate
- provide up to 3 documents that show your permanent home address, such as: records of rent or mortgage payments; household or utility bills; a visa, residence permit or other immigration documents (or a colour photocopy; payslips; a letter from an employer confirming your employment
- bank or savings account statements
- payslips
- proof of income from self-employment
- proof of income from rental property
- a letter from friends or family with evidence (such as bank statements or payslips) that they have the money to support you and your family
- a letter confirming an offer of accommodation from friends or family
- a tenancy or mortgage agreement
- Evidence of your relationship with family members
- If you’re applying with family members from your household, you’ll need to provide evidence of your relationship with them such as: a copy of a marriage or civil partnership certificate; a birth certificate or adoption certificate for children
How to apply for BNO Visa
Now, you can make an application online. If you have a BNO, HKSAR or EEA biometric passport it may be faster to wait and apply from 23 February 2021.
You’ll be able to use the ‘UK Immigration: ID check’ app to prove your identity and upload your documents instead of going to
a visa application centre (VAC).
You’ll be able to access your immigration status online to use immediately, and you will not need to get a vignette (visa sticker) in your passport.
Switch to a BNO visa
There is no restriction of which visa can switch to a BNO visa as long as you meet the eligibility requirements.
